Sewing
At a young age I learned to sew items by hand from my grandmother. Then when I was in high school sewing with Mrs. Nakano, I was taught how to sew some boxer briefs as our first project. As an adult, I have enjoyed working on sewing projects, with and for my children. I foresee sewing (and crafting) being something I will bring to my future classroom. I have sewn many figure skating dresses for my children, and I have sewn dresses for other skaters in our club. I have included some pictures of some of the items I worked on with my children, as well as some of the skating dresses I have made. The enjoyment my children get out of making items is immense and the mathematical reasoning skills and language skills developed in decoding patterns and understanding how to measure and piece together patterns is a transferable skill. The ability to take the pattern from abstract to reality by following written instructions is a skill that is one we can work on and develop through sewing.
Gardening & Canning
I have spent a lot of my life gardening, learning from a young age with my parents and grandparents the importance of sustainable living. I am fortunate enough to own a home with arable space to plant some small gardens. Many of my formative memories are centered around being in the garden on my grandparents farm or working in my parents gardens. Food security is important to a healthy community, canning abundant food, and teaching kids about growing plants even if it is only seeing plants germinate in the classroom is an important key to encouraging more food sustainability within our community. My love for inquiry and science are in large part to watching the processes of nature in the garden. During my time in the Natural Resource Sciences program, I took an Agricultural Science course where we learned about food security and agricultural practices. I spent a summer and fall work term, working for the Ministry of Agriculture where I learned about sampling for moisture in crops, and calculating the right amount of moisture for each particular planting, which was a great experience.
Jewellery Making/Wire work
I am a self taught jewelry/wire-worker. I have sold my hand crafted jewelry at artisan markets and through Facebook for many significant events, weddings, bridal parties, graduations, baby showers and more. These skills in some schools could be used as an afterschool program, or a lunch club craft group. I look forward to sharing my diverse skill set and passions with my students.
